Salvona’s Core Technology Platforms

Salvona has developed several platforms of controlled-release delivery systems for a wide range of applications including pharmaceuticals, personal care and cosmeceuticals, food and nutraceuticals, fabric and household products. Below is a short description of Salvona’s current core technology platforms:

Submicron Systems

SalSphere™ – Hydrophobic submicron-spheres (typical particle diameter 100-400 nm, technology allows for 50-5000 nm) for long-lasting release of functional ingredients in aqueous systems, such as suspensions, creams, and gels. The product can be offered as a natural, synthetic, or blend of materials. A unique feature is the ability of SalSphere™ to adhere to surfaces (skin, hair, mucosa) and specialty rinse-off applications. The SalSphere™ system, in a dispersion, can be used in water-based products with and without surfactants. The release is controlled by the diffusion of the encapsulated active to the surrounding environment and by the partition of functional ingredients onto a targeted surface by solubility. This technology allows for targeted release, due to hydrophobic forces and molecular recognition.


HydroSal™ – submicron-spheres that have a large free volume core structure coated with unique polymers. The technology is made of synthetic polymers. The spheres can be suspended in water or hydro-alcoholic environments, which are ideal for spray-on or clear gel products to form a thin and invisible film containing the encapsulated actives. HydroSal™ provides a longer lasting effect and in some cases moisture and friction triggered release. The release rate is modulated by moisture and governed by diffusion.

Complex Systems


MutliSal™ – Microspheres containing hydrophobic submicron-particles for stability, targeted, water, or pH-triggered release. The product can be made from natural, synthetic, or a blend of synthetic polymers. The microspheres may contain one or more functional ingredients that are encapsulated in different compartments and be adjusted to release the ingredients consecutively.

DermaSal™ – Invisible, body contouring, conformable patches for the delivery of cosmetic, dermatological, and pharmaceutical active ingredients onto the skin. Upon application, the patch provides a substantive therapeutic layer to the treatment site over an extended period of time without the need for an adhesive. The benefits include a dosage form that is localized, application that doesn’t require uncomfortable adhesives, and thus suitable for sensitive skin, wounds, post surgery applications, and irritated skin.


MatrixSal™ – A technology platform consisting of a matrix composition for controlling the lag time and release rate of pharmaceutical and other active ingredients through surface dissolution and/or bulk erosion. The matrix compositions can be formed into microspheres, nanospheres, articles, tablets, or used as a carrier for an implantable device. The MatrixSal™ articles can be further coated to achieve pH responsive release and then sustained release upon reaching a suitable pH environment.
