MatrixSal™

MatrixSal™ is a biodegradable controlled release technology created specifically for use in the diagnostic and health care industries. MatrixSal™ can be used to target and control the release of active ingredients or devices into certain regions under the skin, in the brain, bones, or gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach and small intestine. The matrix composition is stable and maintains its original shape for the desired predetermined time (i.e., the lag time) and then disintegrates through surface dissolution and/or bulk erosion.

The release rate as well as the time lag can accurately be controlled through fine-tuning the matrix composition, dependent in part on the characteristics of individual materials of the composition: water solubility, melting point, glass transition temperatures, mechanical properties, and ratio between hydrophobic and water sensitive materials. Release rate can also be altered and adjusted by manipulating the shape and surface area of a system or article formed from the matrix composition. Flexible structure and design are the key elements which make up the MatrixSal™ technology.

MatrixSal™ can be used to deliver active ingredients that are soluble or dispersible in the composition of the device or in an encapsulated form of microspheres or submicron spheres (nanospheres). MatrixSal™ attributes include:

In vivo studies, MatrixSal™ has been proven not to cause adverse tissue reactions in the body. These systems retain their mechanical and physical integrity as well as release the actives within their structure in a controllable kinetic mechanism. In addition, this delivery system can be easily processed into articles having predetermined geometric dimensions. The articles formed of the matrix composition remain stable upon storage under a variety of conditions.
